I just got my Panasonic GH4, and I'm rather surprised that neither Aperture nor Photoshop (CS6) can open the RAW files. Sigh. Life on the bleeding edge. At least the videos work nicely.
I have a Canon t2i and a Canon EOS M I fly and both have to be run through Adobe DNG converter for me to use them in PS. I'm too cheap to upgrade my PS or Light Bridge...lol I'm sure the GH4 came with a RAW converter, but what a PITA right?
It’s been a while since I was first on my block with a camera. I forgot it takes Apple and Adobe and others a little while to engineer these things. Little known fact: 3rd party RAW converters (Apple, Adobe, Capture One, etc...) have to be reverse-engineered, as the camera manufacturers are notoriously secretive about their formats. It’s a little crazy.
It's been that way since the Nikon D1x as I recall. The NEF format was considered proprietary by Nikon. Seems crazy because, ultimately, the format does get reverse engineered.... Andy.
It’s one of the reasons that all the RAW converters have slightly different results. There are a lot of subjective decisions made by the engineers when they’re under the hood. And we always trust the engineers, right?
"There are a lot of subjective decisions made by the engineers when they’re under the hood" Many years back George Jardine did a podcast with hosts from Adobe talking about everything from color balance the meta data handling with RAW processing. Spent many a road trip with this in the background. Cheers, Jeff
Good news: Apple just released "Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 5.05”. Bad news: The Panasonic GH4 didn’t make the cut. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5955?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US Supported by Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 5.05* Canon EOS Rebel T5 / 1200D / Kiss X70 Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II Nikon D4S† Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX10
Just ordered the GH4 from B&H Hope to have it sometime this month. Any tips or tricks you want to share? E
Hey amigo. A few thoughts... RTFM! This is a deceptively complex machine. If you’re shooting 4K, there are a couple different “4K” resolutions, and they’re not obvious as to how to enable them. 96fps sounds good on paper, but is pretty shoddy. 60fps is much better. Get a super-fast SD card. you need a ‘U3’ card. There’s only a couple.
I hate manuals but I guess i need to read this one. I ordered 2 32GB Extreme PRO SDHC UHS-II Memory Card . Not that familiar with these little cards. E
since I use fcpx to edit, if I shoot .mov i expect it will work well in that workflow but not sure if raw will work yet. Apple is sometimes behind on raw capabilities. Headed to your neck of the woods tomorrow night. Hope to catch up with you maybe the following week.
Is this the card you ordered? It’s what I got, and works great. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produ...pb_032g_a46_32gb_extreme_pro_sdhc_uhs_ii.html
Nope, not on the GH4 itself. If you have the add-on YAGH (or whatever it's name is) you can get uncompressed HDMI out.
OK, looked it up and the YAGH interface provides 4-2-2 10 bit out in 4K, but then you must need to attach an external recorder right? It notes that recording on the card is not possible when outputting 4-2-2 10 bit 4K. Would have been very surprised to get RAW video out at that price - but the 4-2-2 10 bit 4K is awesome.
My bad! The recorder option is the only way to get uncompressed video out. But like Steve said, 4-2-2 10bit 4K is great except it will make your computer a DOS system. Slowwww! E
Just received mine today as well. Looking forward to getting it up in the air, but MAN does this thing have a ton of features. I've primarily shot nikon in the past, but the GH4 just might sway me. But like you Steve, I am frustrated by the usability factor when it comes to RAW conversion.
