thanks for checking this out, i need some help and tips for getting rid of these micro pans which i seem to getting into movi dolly in shots. I have rigged a RED epic and did this shot handheld. tuning settings are pan 100 roll 90 tilt 80 gyro filter 5 . majestic mode with pan window on 40
Just a guess but in that situation while walking, framing, not tripping up the steps it gets very hard to to keep absolute control of everything. Guessing it was also one handed? Maybe others can comment on what settings they use in this situation for Pan Window and you didn't mention your value for Pan Smoothing.
before post stabilisation stabilisation with da vinci resolve I rejigged the camera so now the there is less wires running through the rig to the handles. Only RED epic cable and BNC. the results looks bait better I think. But there is still pan wobble. Anyway to completely kill it? red epic single remote focus RT motion Voigtlander Nokton Classic 35mm f/1.4 Stiffness on all axis on 100 pan window : 10 Smoothness : 10
Something does seem odd about your balance and settings, however this shot would definitely be easier to achieve with a 2 man setup. Rebalance, pay lots of attention to pan balance, re do gains/stiffness, have a larger pan window.
I have been advice to balance for more roll stability than tilt stability. Just curious what are your settings? Are u mounting a RED epic with cine lens? also I would love to see your dolly in shots.
Your main problem is not roll, although i can see the horizon is off. I've flown the Epic, C300, Blackmagic 4k and DSLRs. I have no idea what my stiffness settings are, they change on every camera config. I have used the Epic with Zeiss ZF still lenses and a Bartech follow focus which looks similar to your setup, which is what the following sequence in this video was shot on. - go to 48' 40".
Hey Charles, check the chart on your tablet that shows how much strength your pan motor is using during the shot and as it hangs on its stand. If the pan motor is using a lot of power to stay straight on the stand (+/- 10% or more) then I'd rebalance the pan. As a tip, I like to have no wires running from the camera to the handle bars if possible. You don't need to keep the Red LCD plugged into it. Keep it close so if you need to make camera setting changes, you can kill the MoVI and plug it in.
thx for the motor monitoring tip - i will check that yea the red cable is just not worth it. I have decided to not have that anymore and only a thin bnc runs out from the gimbal to the handles.
Pan stiffness at 100 seems very low for that setup. Also, the stiffness settings will never be the same on every axis, you should go through and tune each one for the best results, and they always increase, from tilt, roll, to pan. For straight shots you can bump up the pan window to 15-20 so even if you move it it won't really change direction until you really pan the bar.
I think about 150 on the pan, if I remember correctly. The pan balance is the most difficult to get right, but it's worth it to spend the time.
I have gimbal upside down to use it with a steadicam, whats the procedure to balance the pan in this configuration?
Not really going to help you, but I shot this last week after going over the balancing tutorials available on vimeo by a few different guys.. I couldn't believe my eyes when I played this back.. Shot on the C100. No skateboards or golf karts, just old fashioned walking..
