Has anyone tried this? I'm shooting a advertising piece airing on Snapchat, and would prefer not to crop and instead rotate the camera.

My first thought is an L bracket type solution but I'm not sure if the weight will be too much to one side or the other. Likely using 5dmk4.

I haven't tried mounting a camera vertically, but I assume roll balance won't be an issue. The 5d series is wider than it is tall, so when mounted vertically you'll have more room to shift the camera's roll balance. I imagine you might have to remove the top bar, but maybe not.
