I want to drop my gimbal down pipe by about 30cm or so to get rid of the horrid boom in shoot.

Does this effect the flying of the cinestar dropping the weight down more?

If you have done it how long is it now?

sorry about the heading I cant figure out how to change it!!

    G'Day Jason,

The further down the weight goes the flight characteristics are going to get worse. Ideally the CoG for the entire aircraft needs to be fairly tight vertically. Theoretically the best performance will come with the CoG in line with the props, and the FC on the same plane.

I have used varying lengths of gimbal down tube lengths ranging from 110mm to about 180mm and the effects were not to bad. It is also going to depend on the weight of the camera package you are flying.

However going for 30cm is quite a large change, your best bet would be to do some test flights with various length down tubes, use some dumbells to simulate the camera/gimbal weight and see how it goes.

The flight performance will drop off the further weight moves away from the props, and the aircraft will start to pendulum. Its just a matter of doing the testing until you reach the point where you think it is still manageable to fly. It is going to depend on how much extra power you have on the copter in reserve. If your base hover throttle value is high >60% you will probably experience the pendulum effects sooner than you would if your base hover value was 40%.

I'm interested in seeing your results.

    Cheers

    Chris

    Thanks for your input Chris!!

I dropped it from the original 125mm to 150mm today I figure that its not a huge drop.

I have a job tom so i guess tom is test day!

I know Ceasar at www.steamboataerials.com has done it.
Cant find the video now but using some gimbal parts it was quite nicely done :)

Looks a lot heavier compared to carbon fibre frames?

well it says Frame Weight (1200mm): 1398g (inc. landing legs) for the vulcan. I dont how much a standard frame weighs!
