Hey guys, just wanted to share with you an amazing opportunity the Freefly team was given recently. Several months back we were contacted by the production team for " The Wolf of Wall Street" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0993846/ in regards to capturing some aerials for the film. They wanted to use the upcoming Canon C500 camera with a Convergent Designs Gemini external recorder. We were very excited to get our hands on the C500 after having used the C300 and really liking the image quality. It took a few days of shop time to get the gimbal setup for the C500 and external recorder as the setup is pretty big and heavy. We machined a custom mount for the Gemini which allowed it to bolt to the gimbal, and stretched the gimbal a little bit to accommodate the C500 with a Canon 16-35 lens. After seeing the imagery it was well worth the effort. The C500 creates a beautiful image....even at 1080p! The 4K RAW image is gorgeous. We used some prototype gear on the shoot which performed really well. It was a stressful and demanding shoot with some scenes having hundreds of actors / extras in them. I will share more as production allows us to. For now I just wanted to give a little update and share about this exciting opportunity. Best, Tabb Photo of the CS8 with C500 getting ready for liftoff
How exciting. Thanks for the post Tabb and congratulations on the job and look forward to hearing more about it. It's great to hear that the cinestar is getting its day Katya
Looks like that Big Ugly Box on the left-hand side is the recorder? Did you have a video downlink of the 500's footage? Also, how did you extend the landing gear? Looks like a custom mod -- you must be in tight with the guys who run FreeFly, eh? Andy.
Hi Andy, yes that was the recorder....a bit of a pain to deal with but worth the effort for the lovely 4K image. Yes we had live view of the 500's footage (C500 has SD composite output for a downlink) I actually stole some adjustable tilt bars and bolted them on as leg extenders Andy! Even I have a hard time getting custom stuff done! Tim, I can assure you that there is no DJI compass anywhere near that machine Thanks everyone, very excited to share the end result! Tabb
All around, I'd say the whole thing is a tremendous coup for you, Tabb. Neat idea for the landing gear extension, too, although it makes for very pointy ground contact -- no pool noodles here..... Andy.
Isnt al this just Tabb´s way of teasing us with little bits of info about one of several Cinestar Heavy Lifters that he is working on
Aren't those Xoar props? Tabb is a tease, but I have a feeling the battle-tested gear will be worth the wait.
Hi Steve, the props in the photo are XOAR 15x5. I do like the 14x4.7 but they are not up to the task of carrying the 12lb gimbal and camera weight as it was setup for this job. Tabb
Tabb, when will we be able to bye the C8 with 500 or 550 booms as default? Instead of the shorter ones if we dont need them? Regards from Sweden.
Tabb, I wonder about FreeFly Servo performance under that heavy load. How much voltage did you supply to the servo? (6V? ) And was it enough to balance the camera properly in order to make the servo perform as you liked?
