For the 5D mk/III crowd this sounds interesting. Record to raw. http://www.eoshd.com/content/10324/...continuous-raw-recording-on-canon-5d-mark-iii
Great find, Gary. It's amazing what the Magic Lantern team have been able to do with Canon cameras. Makes you wonder why Canon doesn't just hire them all! Andy.
I suspect the Digic III chipset just doesn't have the compute power for that frame rate. Maybe the 5D Mk IV or V? Andy.
It still amazes me that GoPro were able to squeeze 1080p60 and 720p120 (as well as 2.7K and sorta 4K) out of the Hero3 Black Edition, and Canon and the others can't even come close. Somebody's going to make this happen. Maybe GoPro should build a M4/3 camera to compete with the GH3. Or just make a couple different lenses for the Hero3. Hmm...
Wait until you see the HDR mode. Saw some clips up on the Magic Lantern sight. Sounds similar with what RED does in HDRX mode, intersperse every other frame with a different exposure and then somehow blend it together. http://www.red.com/faqs/hdrx/overview
Gary, I tired it awhile back and its ok... but it doesn't grab the same frame so you need to keep the movement down unlike the Reds which actually shoot the same frame twice. Also with the 5D you have to shoot in 720 if you want 30 fps final output. but yes its pretty neat
Ok... so I've played with the ML raw now for a day and all I can say is WOW! anyone else ran ML raw yet ?
No problems with camera wedging/bricking, Brad? I was thinking of waiting until the next release just to let it stabilize -- a technique I learned from a colleague who's still on Windows 95, and waiting for Windows/NT to stabilize.... Andy.
It's got to be the sensor in the 5D. The FS100 is able to pull 60fps 1080p, but that's off a Super35 sensor, much smaller than the FullFrame in the 5D. Yet, there's no doubt there's a different between the Super35 and the FF sensors -- but they both are recording at a HD1920x1080 resolution. Therefore, I think the 5D is recording in a way that uses it's entire sensor to give you the 1920x1080 picture, sampling a full 23MPs while something like the HERO3 is only sampling a 12MP sensor (and a much smaller data rate) and the Super35 clocks in at around 8MPs. Notice the RED Scarlet does a sensor clop when you clock it higher than 24 or 30fps. I think the problem with the 5D is it's massive sensor size and downsampling to produce the HD image -- it simply just can't buffer twice the bandwidth of information. But i'm just guessing...
I noticed a link to a 1000x CF card in the ML documentation: http://www.ebay.com/itm/KOMPUTERBAY...MB-s-Extreme-Speed-UDMA-7-128GB-/140878263839 Anyone using one of the above? At $189 it is a lot less that the the Lexar http://www.amazon.com/Lexar-Professional-1000x-CompactFlash-LCF128CTBNA1000/dp/B007C0VHVM which is $649. I wonder whether you gets what yous pays for? EDIT: The Komputerbay reviews are illuminating: http://www.amazon.com/KOMPUTERBAY-1...dp_top_cm_cr_acr_txt?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=1 I think I'll go with Lexar or Sandisk. Andy.
The 128 GB cards are not getting the write speeds that they are showing maxing out between 70 -80 the 64GB seem to be the card of choice with the write speed to do 1920x1080 on a 5dM3. 5DM2 are still limited from the hardware
I grabbed a few simple shots while out for a wander about yesterday afternoon. I am finding most clips out there being sharpened to death so I purposely left them totally stock right out of the camera... other than the B/W parts. What will be exciting is the crop modes if we can get stable 3.5k at some point with faster cards or an interface to sata. If i get time today I may do a proper side by side with our BMC and Epic or at least with the Epic as the ones I have seen are slightly biased it seems.
Brad what lens are you using for that 5d raw sample? Looking forward to your unbiased test of the three cameras. Thanks for taking the time
