My MOVI m5 just arrived and I'm having loads of fun playing with it. I've noticed that on my RC, the roll joystick is not controlling the roll. Is it supposed to? I can't find a place to set the roll control in the configurator. Only the roll trim. Maybe this just isn't a feature? I was hoping to use roll when I attach it to a jib.
Jack: Good question. Let me do some checking.... How familiar are you with Radio Control transmitters, by the way? Just so I know at what level of detail to answer your question.... Andy.
Jack: I had a 20 minute break so I figured I'd tell you the whole story... Just to give you the big picture first: The left stick being used as a "Rudder" controller (in RC terms) has effectively been disabled. Therefore we have to enable it. Here are the steps -- and I'm going to have to devise a brief notation to tell you what to do on the transmitter. It has a thumbwheel on the right hand side that can be rolled left or right in discrete click stops. You can also push the thumbwheel down to make it select things. So: TWR means Thumbwheel to the right one click stop. TWR2 means thumbwheel right two. TWR3 means thumbwheel right three. TWL will mean thumbwheel left one click stop. PTW means press the thumbwheel. What we're going to need to do is get into the D/R (Dual Rate menu) so get the manual out and turn to page 17 (Assuming it's a DX7s transmitter). If it's not a DX7s, search in the table of contents for Dual Rate/Exponential. We need to change the D/R: value from 0 to 100 for the rudder and check whether the left stick is set to normal or reversed action. Turn the MōVI off! Turn the transmitter on. PTW (Screen change to Function List) TWR2 (Moves selection to D/R and Expo) PTW (Select D/R-Expo screen) TWR (Moves selection to Aileron) PTW (Selects so you can change away from Aileron) TWR2 (Changes Aileron to Rudder). PTW (Selects Rudder) TWR (The rectangle should be on D/R: 0) PTW (Selects the 0 so you can change it) TWR as many times as you need to to get the value to 100. PTW (stops rectangle around 100 flashing and sets the value to 100). At this point, look over to the left of the Transmitter screen. You should see that if you move the left stick all the way to the left, the vertical marker line moves all the way to the RIGHT (yup, right....) and vice versa...stick right, marker left. Press the BACK button (just to the left of the screen). If for some reason in step 14. when you move the stick left, the vertical line also moves left, then: TWL (To move selection to Servo Setup). PTW (To enter Servo Setup). TWR (To move selection rectangle to Travel). PTW (To cause the selection rectangle to flash so you can change the setting). TWR2 (To change the value in the flashing rectangle to Reverse). PTW (To stop the selection rectangle from flashing). TWR (To move selection window to Throttle). PTW (To start selection rectangle flashing). TWR3 (To display Rudder inside flashing rectangle). PTW (To stop selection rectangle flashing with Rudder displayed. TWR (To move selection rectangle down to NOR REV -- that's normal and reverse). PTW (To toggle the setting -- NOR should have the dark rectangle underneath it). Press the BACK button twice (just to the left of the screen). Power up the MōVI and you should find that you now have control of Roll with the left stick. Let me know if it works out for you. Andy.
By the way, if you decide that you don't want to control the Roll with the left stick, here are the steps to "undo" the above: Turn the MōVI off! PTW (Selects Rudder) TWR (The rectangle should be on D/R: 100) PTW (Selects the 0 so you can change it) TWL as many times as you need to to get the value to 0. PTW (stops rectangle around 0 flashing and sets the value to 0). Press the BACK button (just to the left of the screen). The left stick is now effectively disabled, but the Roll Trim will still work so you can tweak it in case your shooting in a part of the world where gravity is not pointing straight down... Andy.
Andy (and others), Does this mean that there's actually a spare channel on the Spektrum receiver because the roll channel isn't in use in the default setup? Would it be possible to re-map that channel to an RC Shutter, for example?
Steve the channel is being used with the trim button only. It uses rudder channel 4 on the Spektrum. On the DX7s that shipped with the M10 the Rudder stick doesn't work since the D/R (a setting on that channel in the DX7 that can adjust the way the stick responds) has been set to "0" which means it has no output since the line is flat. I don't have a system setup with a standard RX but you could easily check how much roll you would get using the stick. Set the D/R value to 100 which is would be a standard setting on the Spektrum RX line.
This is great information, wondering how far you guys reached with your roll angle, we're looking to do something like the bus shot in this scene from Donnie Darko (first 14 seconds): We changed our D/R rudder value to the max on our DX8 which is 125, but haven't been able to roll all the way to 90 degrees, its more like a 45. Thanks for any suggestions.
I don't think there's a way to do that, Aaron. I don't know to which RC channel the roll speed responds (if any). Andy.
Thanks Andy, I guessed that. And even if there was a channel for control - my DX8 does not have any available control knob left to assign it... :-/
Hi guys, How do you trigger your shutter if the receiver has no spare channels? can you plug in an AR8000 or similar that will increase your channels ?
