A friend linked a video on his facebook of a cinestar8 HL with the MOVI gimbal carrying a 35,000 dollar medium format camera clipping a tree. The actual video of the full crash was embedded w/o link. But I found this one from the cameras website. The camera is called the Phase One. The mishap pilot is flying backwards at a high rate and low altitude following a stunt mountain biker over several burms. As the copter nears a tree apparently the pilot misjudged the proximity of the A/C to the obstacle. The aircraft strikes the Juniper tree with the left number 7 boom. Flips perfectly lateral lands on one of the booms. You will see at 0:17 in the video. What you don't see is that the copter rolls down the hill on the tips of the booms like a wagon wheel eventually coming to a stop inverted. The 15,000 dollar Movi and the 35,000 dollar camera are saved by the copter dissipating the energy on the booms while rolling. Hello Shaun, Thanks for the video link. In the video it's said that, the copter crashed while shooting behind the scenes. I think they crashed with another camera, not with Phase One.
Pilot error always somehow makes me feel better, like that's a fixable problem. In this case it looks like it was a simple case of being too anxious and accommodating to what the DP was asking for. I am pretty sure that was a RED on there for the flying scenes, because that Phase One System is stills only. Weird...the video might as well be a RED promo.

It's our new 50MP CMOS Camera the IQ250. The Cinestar crashed while the RED was onboard... Luckily for us. The idea was to shoot with the IQ on board but the crash and ultimately the weather put the stoppers on that. However, the shoot a still came out just fine. David Phase One.
Nice of a Phase one representative to join in! Thanks David! So you did manage to get some P1 stills from the CS before flying with the Red and crashing? Where were you guys filming? I used to be an avid biker and remember Cam being just a young punk. Was this up in the Kamloops area of BC?
And David is the man. David good to hear from you. Just to clarify for Duane, the IQ is a stills only camera. It doesn't shoot video. And for still shoots who want REALLY large files the battle is always between Hasselblad and PhaseOne.
I wasn't on the shoot sadly. But I think we only got as far as test shots with the IQ (controllable via WiFi) before the crash and the rain! The location was in San Diego if I recall correctly.

Question for you David....I fly my IQ260 on a CS8 but have been afraid to turn on the wifi and possibly interfere with the Tx/RX signal. Is it safe to have the wifi on while in the air?

I can second that. I've known David since he was at Hasselblad. He knows his stuff. You want really large files? Shoot HDR 3-exposures per position and shoot a 360 with a Gigapan with an H4D with 100mm lens. Then edit in Photoshop and add a few layers. Ooof. Seriously large files. AMHIK. Andy.
What motors were on board? I thought they were Tiger 4012's until I looked that video on my 60 inch TV and saw that they look like the prototype cinestar HL. Are they?
Well, maybe thats a question for the radio experts? We run the WiFi on 2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz but I can't remember if this is auto or can be manually controlled. Or its network dependant. Anyway, I will find out. Andy - any thoughts? PS - Can you share some work you have done? Would be really interested to see it.
Update! If you were to connect the IQ via a router where you can configure the band to be either 2.4 or 5GHz, then that would be the way to go. Assuming your Tx is operating on 2.4? D
The aircrafts RC is running 2.4, and 2.4 wifi has been causal lost links. So being to the goto 5ghz spectrum is cool and should mitigate lost link. Shaun
