Does anyone have experience flying a more or less standard c8 3 axis at high altitude - like 14,000 feet? Is this possible? I figure I would have to lighten my payload, fly something lighter than a 5d. Wonder how long batts would last and whether controls would be mushy?

    Bryan,

I've flown a Mark III at +/- 7,000ft. From my limited experience, my motors stayed cooler, but because of the thinner air my flight time decreased.

I'm sure a lot of others here have more experience at higher altitudes.

10K + and no appreciable difference. Props will loose efficiency by 3% per 1000 feet above sea level. Of course my normal altitude is 6000 feet but i still did not notice any difference.

    Ive done 13000ft but at 2F the air density helps a good bit. 2, 6600 4s packs on a standard CS8 w 3 axis, QC motors carrying a 5d and 16-35.

Brad, what does 2F mean? Any noticeable control issues or unusual flight characteristics? How much flight time did you get on those batteries?

    thanks!

I've flown my X8 w/ epic/zeiss @ 12k'ish with dual 6s 5100 without issues. Got around 5 minutes of flight, could get more but I never run my batteries below 22.75. I don't see 14k being that much different but would make sure you have plenty of extra gear/batteries/props
and do a prep day at that altitude before you shoot to work out any bugs.

Day to prep and to make sure you aren't prone to altitude sickness.

If condensation forms on the FC, yes, bad (even worse for the MOSFETs on the power distribution board). If not, I doubt it will be a problem (other than for the pilot).

Yeah that was my biggest fear, I am not sure we could really have a place to get it to slowly acclimate.

As for me flying it, I have some of my newer military mountain gear from when I was with the 10th Mountain In Afghanistan so I should be ok.

Seriously, that would be a good thing to do. If you could let the equipment cold soak before you fly, that would help.

As to the mountain gear, you have my instant respect.

    Andy.
