    Hi Mark,

Would it be possible to ask you if you could show us with pics or explain how shims/wedges were being used?

    Thank you!

    Hi Guys,

Sorry Im on a remote shoot in out back Auz so only have internet through a v.slow mobile, limited bandwidth so not able to post piccies.
But the way sam showed us was to pack available space around the camera on the mounting bracket with gaffa taped cardboard shims/wedges, rubber ones would work equally as well.
He also said, and others may have different ways, that when using 5D's etc that a third party plate on the 5d that supports more of the camera base would help before mounting it to the free fly plate, as the way the weight distribution works with those cameras and lenses creates more of an unbalance on the mounting plate.
To give an example Im currently using an Epic with V-loc side plate and where there is space between the camera and side bars or battery and side bars I'm packing the space out with the wedges, also the space between the camera and mounting bars if possible, it seems to allow me to higher values by some margin out of the motors before oscillation starts.
I hope some of that helps
    best

    Mark

That was extremely helpful! Thanks for taking the time to write back!

Can't wait to see the pics once you have time! I'll try share my set up of tomorrow's shoot.

Interesting. I was just thinking yesterday about those rubber vibration reducers that can be inserted into the strings of tennis racquets.
I think I might buy a couple and try.

Very interesting. Willl experiment with this.

WHat V mount system are you using and how are you mounting it?

    Many Thanks

Paul, are you inside or outside? Also the initial GPS lock can take awhile while the GPS sorts out where it is for the first time.

I have yet to ever see the GPS "locked"

I know you've said it takes time Gary but am starting to wonder if somethings wrong with our unit. Sorry if this is slightly OT.

    Thank you,

    PCG

Mark, Tabb or Gary, could you elaborate on the shim/wedge idea? More along the lines of why having something with minimal weight gain would affect the stiffness? Should there be some significant pressure on the side of the tilt tray from the gaffa taped wedge?

Just foam will do .... all it is some additional material to dampen any high frequency vibrations to prevent the resonance that occurs. The movement can be the camera rocking on the base plate, or the lens in the lens mount, or any of the FF or transmission add ons on the camera. If there is a gap that a component can move back and forward, a bit of dampening material in there will allow a slightly higher stiffness setting ...
