Hello, my name is Noel Zinger. I've been an image maker for over 30 years. I own SkyReel Aerial Imaging Inc. based in Canada. We've been operating with UAVs for 7 years. We operate with an SFOC (Special Flight Operations Certificate) issued by Transport Canada (US FAA equivalent) which allows us to legally fly UAVs Commercially (for profit). We've flown documentaries, entertainment shows and at present, are venders with Shell Energy, Nova Chemicals, Keyara and others, flying flair tip inspections. Very, very enthusiastic about your new MOVI MR

Beautifull country. I was in BC for 20 years before moving back to Montreal. Enough of this. I see that you fly a coaxial copter can you tell us something more about it?
    Always interesting what people fly.

    Cheers
    Bill

Sorry Noel I took the post out I thought it may have been inappropriate to ask you so soon on welcoming you, any way my question is what where the requirements that the SFOC require to certify you in Canada its just a heads up so when our turn is in the US, hopefully it will happen soon and well though off
    thanks

An SFOC isn't like a drivers license where you fill in the blanks. You submit a list of requirements along with the 5Ws that will apply to your flight and TC accepts those "conditions" in part or in whole and issues an SFOC that allows the UAV operator to fly as long as you can fly within the conditions in the issued SFOC. They are time and date specific for the first few applications. If on the day of your flight it's pouring rain and you can't fly you have to resubmit to fly on another day. SkyReel's SFOCs are "open" (for lack of a better term) for 13 months at a time giving us the flexibility to fly any job as they come along.

You must list the systems your flying. SkyReel can fly the Moviecat II with the RED One camera the Draganfly 4X-P the MK 4,6 or 8 rotor UAVs and the Aeryon Scout. You also need an insurance company that will cover you for 2 million PL on your UAV. This is one of the most difficult conditions to get in place.

After that the rest of the conditions are absolute common sense. An example of a couple of our "conditions"
    9. The UAV shall give way to manned aircraft.
    16. The Certificate holder shall have an observer...
    19. Flight over spectators is prohibited (not to say that you couldn't submit an application to fly over people in a "controlled" filming situation and get an SFOC that would allow you to do that)

I hope the FAA finds a solution for the commercial use of UAVs soon too.

    Jose,
Let me know if there is a more appropriate location to continue the FSOC conversation.

    Hello Bill,
We fly multi rotors exclusively now.

You might want to just start a separate thread for FSOC discussions, Noel. Maybe in Cinestar Misc?

Don't hold your breath regarding the FAA. :(

Hi! My name is Eric and I'm so glad I stumbled onto this site - lots of good stuff here.
I spent a few years in the film industry flying 35mm movie cameras on large gasoline powered helis (36 lbs with fuel and 100' film loads) that ended in 1996. So, I guess I might be an old-timer ;)
Anyway, I'm hoping to catch up to the modern world and see where all this leads again.

Hello Noel! We met in an RV park in Banff in 2011 - I was parked across from you one evening and wandered over to see how you did your work. Nice to see you're still active.

Hello I am creative director at Rockhopper VFX, I am a visual effects director, mainly specialising in Matte Painting. I am a member of the Guild of Television Cameramen, and based in the UK. I like to work on independent productions, however have worked as ENG cameraman for several years. I was obsessed with steadicam for many years, but ENG and Steadicam do not work, Until I saw the MOVi, I am also starting to learn about UAV photography, I was the go to guy for hanging out of helicopters shooting stills and Video for a firm last year and I think UAV is the way ahead, with cost, safety and ease of use. I look forward to hanging out and talking to you guys,

Hello Eric, I remember meeting you in Banff. Great to hear from you again. I can hardly remember the days of film......and I'm not missing them. If your looking to get back in the game, it looks like Tabb's hit a home run with the Movi MR. I'm stopping the build side of our company and looking to purchase turnkey systems. We only make money when we're in the air.
