Which non-linear editor are you planning to use? Final Cut? Avid? Adobe Premiere?
The choice of post stab is more determined by the plug-ins available for the NLE software.

@Andy I actually use all 3 NLEs. FCP7 is losing the #1 spot to Premiere right now :/

@Marc Thanks! I think I will try to use warp for now. I am downloading a trial of proDAD.

I ask because post stab is not something I keep up with, until now...

I hear you regarding FCP7. The cost of change is a little bit high....need to re-learn a lot of the things I know how to do in FCP7. :( Plus I have built-in "finger macros" for driving FCP7....The good news is that you can switch AP to use the same keystrokes for FCP7.

    Hi Kjetil:
That's a good question. I'm afraid I tried to use FCP X in the early days, soon after its "escape" (i'm convinced it wasn't released!) and I'm now scarred for life.

There seems to be quite a few folks who solved the problem:
    http://www.edit-avchd-mac.com/fcp-tips-easily-import-and-edit-sony-cx730-avchd-mts-in-fcp/

Quite a few of the hits are fairly transparent promotional postings for Brorsoft (which I've used, but it didn't seem to work too well for me).

I don't use FCPX, I'm still on FCP7. But why are you using 50i? You should use 50P. Much more data, and I don't think you need to deliver interlaced content.

As far as CX cam footage, I always convert it to ProRes first using PavTube, then I can do whatever I want with it in FCP7. And I use Motion when I have to, although if the Radians are tuned and the gimbal is balanced, there's usually no reason to do so.

25i and 50i are the same thing. 25 frames per second with 50 Fields (interlaced frame) per second.

Either way, you don't want it. Stabilizing programs need progressive (whole) frames to work properly.

As an editor for over 10 years, I've cut/on-lined on just about everything Avid Symphony, Nitrus HD, Composer, DS, FCP 3-7, and now Premiere CS6. Talking about out of the box included filters/effects the warp stabilize in After Effects is by far the best. There is a bit of a learning curve if you're not used to keyframing, but with a little time you can get really good results. I've seen a lot of videos done by people using the SMoothCam on FCP and watching them makes me feel like a I ate a bag of shrooms. The video squishes and morphs all over the frame.

Used/tried mostly all of them and I still get better results with VirtualDub Deshaker...lot's of parameters to learn but once you master them you can produce amazing results. The bad: PC based

    Hi Matt,

Can you describe how you decide on the settings for Warp Stabilizer? I seem to be able to stabilize the footage, but the sharpness is gone, and you'd feel like you ate a bag of shrooms after you see my final.

Jonathon I still get a bit of vibration but am able to use about 10% sometimes a bit less to remove it. Start low and work your way up to find the sweet spot.

Thanks, Gary. Do you always use the Subspace Warp setting, or do you use any of the "lesser" ones like Perspective OR Position,Scale, and Rotation?

I take the defaults. Never took time to play around with changing them. Only thing I change is percentage. I have done overlays of before after with the top layer being a percentage of 100% viewable and at 10% lose very little. But starting with a pretty stable image to being with. Give it a try. You'd be surprised how little it will take.

Unfortunately there is nothing specific I can tell you. PLay with your tracking points a bit if you are not happy with your primary results. After a while you will get better at choosing them right off the bat. Unfortunately this is not an exact science and some footage will just shake too much. The sharpness you are losing is because of the crop factor that happens when you render. Try lowering your settings or making the box smaller on your tracking points.

I've used FCP 7 for years, but decided to try FCP X to ease the workflow for the AVCHD codec. I may be just the type of person that they made FCPX for: not very technically inclined and I love it. I do not run into all of the snags and hangups that seemed to occur with FCP7 and the stabilization works great. The rendering all occurs in the background and you never need to hit the Save button. Things just work in X and I don't spend hours on the forums trying to solve problems. There were some early problems when it was released and it is a completely new concept and the terminology has changed, but it works great for $300 you can't go wrong.

I've stuck with FCPX because its what all the kids know and they are cheap to hire! :)
