I'm building a CS8 that will carry a RED camera. Please give me some information what motors and props I should use. I also heard a rumour that there was a new CS8 coming specially made for a RED...

    Regards
    Johan

    Hey Johan,

Our CS8 currently carries an EPIC for jobs.

We used to use the AXI 4120, but found them too heavy....

Now we are on KW8 with 14x5 XOAR Props.

But we run 4 x 5S 5000mAh packs mounted on the booms with custom CF battery plates.

Ed, we're looking at upgrading our motors in order to fly an Epic, do you think the KW8 motors are the best way to go right now? Do you have any sample footage? I'd love to see it.

    Hey Benjamin,

I dont know if the KW8s are the best, honestly i am still exploring, i just found the KW8s to be a whole lot better compared to the AXI 4120 in terms of weight and performance.

I am still looking for a better alternative..

i dont have much sample footages per se, we dont get to fly the epic very often, these days its always the 5D.

but there are some EPIC shots in this TVC we helped produce, we provide the Aerials, combination of actual helis and cinestar, mix of EPIC shots and 5D shots.

That's quite a commercial! Thanks for the info on the motors - let us know if you find something you prefer over the KW8s. I've seen a few other folks praise those motors - I'll take a look at them.

I'm in the same hunt for motors and prop combo. I was considering the RCTiger motors like the MT3515 or the MT2826-10s. Can you share your AUW with the 4 lipos and the RED Epic? Thanks in advance

I noticed that nobody is using the side handle when flying the red? Are you using a lipo to power the camera then?

We have the 2820 / 14 setup on our DJI wookong CS8 combo and it works nicely with our red camera test weight. Blades make the most difference. apc 14's are key to lifting the heavy weight although with smaller weight (dslrs) the wookong likes the 12 inch APC's better. This provides much less vibrations.

    Hey Justin,

    I modified our battery mount.

I am using the original RED Volt.

What i did was take apart a RED Volt charger, removed the internals, and just soldered two leads into a LEMO for the camera.

This way i get to mount the battery anywhere i want on the gimbal and i get to use the original batteries.

    =)

I've exchanged emails with the KW8 folks. What are you using for the esc? MK or something else?

Thanks. I've heard good things about the castles. Are you running MK for flight control? If so what did you pick for IC2 converter?

For big motors it just seems to be more cost effective to use individual ESC's over something like the Aerodron Aerodrive or Herkules boards.

    Hey Gary....

i am using the DJI Wookong M as a FC, no need for a IC2 converter.

i never liked the idea of an all in one board like the aerodrive, alot of our shoots are in obscure areas in forested or rural areas, i wanted a system our operators can easily troubleshoot and repair in the field.

having 8 ESCs is damn messy looking, but for practical reasons, its easier to maintain and repair.

    Hey Daniel...

We are using the ICE LITE 50A, there is a multi rotor firmware update of sorts from Castle to make the ESCs capable for multi rotor use.

Make sure you get that done and you are all set.

We use Castle Link to update firmwares, configure and program the ESCs. pretty nifty and convenient, just have to program one ESC, save the setting files and then upload the same onto the rest of the ESCs.
