I borrowed a Canon 5DS from Canon Professional Services to compare it to the 5D Mark III bodies I use for still photos. The 5DS is almost identical from the outside, with just a few very minor changes, so it worked great out of the box on my MōVI M5. The files are amazing...50.6 megapixels is a TON of data. The body doesn't do too well at high ISOs, but that's not usually an issue for aerial stills. I shot these at ISO 200 and ƒ5.6 at shutter speeds of around 1/800-1/1000. The lens I used (my old 16-35 Mk 1) is not as sharp as other lenses I've used for normal tests, but I had the MōVI set up for that lens so I just went ahead and used it. First, here's a simple shot that illustrates the amount of data in those files. Next, here are a few photos I shot of the beach today. Enjoy!
As they say, "Don't do this at home. Go to a friend's house." Or in this case, "Don't do this with your own camera..." Andy
Nice Steve, we have the Canon 5DS as well and have created a module which plugs into the usb to control the camera and change settings from the ground. It's a pretty amazing camera!
Do you mean the Canon wifi adapter? Or do you have something that works with the RC radios? That'd be pretty cool, although I find for stills that there's nothing I need to change. Video is a little different, as I'd want to be able to control exposure more carefully, but I was unimpressed with the 5DS video.
It's pretty cool, I built a module about half the size of a matchbox. It's controlled by RC radio (our is Futaba 14SG) with a single sbus lead and is very handy when taking shots in the early morning or evening when the exposure is changing quite quickly.
Steve: How high did you run the ISO and where did you feel it broke down? I have been thinking about having CPS send me one for the exact same reason.
