Ben: If you do cut the CF dry, be sure to post pictures of yourself and your immediate surroundings afterwards! <evil grin>

Man, the dust must be bad! I only need to make one cut, so hopefully I'll live... (Here lies Ben, killed by carbon.)

Well, in a pinch, a trim saw (human powered) with a jig makes cutting carbon tubes fairly easy. I poured a bit of water on it to cut down on the dust. Now, to stretch that gimbal...

Sounds like you managed to tame the Dust Devil! A little water spray or poured on does the trick.

Just going from memory, that's pretty much on a par with a 5D Mk III with 24mm prime.....just can't remember whether that was with a 24/1.4 (which is heavier) than the 24/2.8 IS.

I took a standard Cinestar 8 boom and cut it in half, so they are about 225mm long. Quadrocopter sells tubes that are 215mm long now, so I'd just buy a pair of those.

    Matt: I think that's a good idea.
I presume you would update it by just editing the message?
Or would it be better to have a Google document to which the thread links -- then you (or anyone else) could update the Google doc?

    Andy.

Can you tilt directly down with the fs700? Also what lens are you using. Im having trouble finding a good balance point, even with extended side booms. Are your side booms directly horizontal? and also did you extend the vertical boom of the gimbal?

    Really appreciate the help.

Joe: You cannot get a good balance point with the side arms horizontal if the centre of gravity is above or below the axis of the roll mechanism.
The C of G has be right in line with the axis. if it's too high, then the gimbal will roll left or right, and if it's too low, it will pendulum into the center. So you will have to move the side arms to tilt up to bring the C of G into line with the roll axis, I suspect.

Did anyone ever tried the GH3? How does it compare to the FS100 in real life?
I have an F3 and looking for a cam that cuts fine for aerials. FS100 is obvious match...but much heavier!!!
    Any thoughts are welcome.

Search ViMEO for GravityShots and you can find some GH3 videos from Jeff Scholl.

If you are trying to match s-log, you will not have a true match. fs100/700 cannot run s-log. There are some s-log simulation settings, but that is it. For that matter I could simulate s-log on other non-FS and non-sony cams. I have flown various lumix cams. IMHO, I am not a fan of the smaller sensor/lens selection.

The obvious reasons I am considering GH3 are: 1/4 price and 1/2 weight compared to FS100.
I meant a picture quality match.
I am afraid the GH3 will look as bad as my 7D compared to the F3.
Comments over the web claim GH3 to be as good or even better then FS100.
Is that right? Any personal experience with both on cinestar? Jello issues......Dinamic Range......Codec issues.....
