Shot a test with Movi mounted with Toad in the Hole and Ninja star on a bike carrier on car. Controlling from Spektrum radio inside vehicle in Remote Mode. When car is moving the Movi tends to spin and try to keep a constant heading, so you have to fight it all the time with the remote to maintain a shot. I'm missing something in my set-up somewhere. Duh!

    Hi Alasdair

From my experience, this behaviour is 'correct' however I can see why it may not be desired. i.e. you want to shoot a trailing car without having to 'steer' MoVi every time your vehicle turns a corner.

Perhaps you could leave MoVI in majestic and just adjust tilt as required - You would need to play around with the Majestic Pan Window.

How is your footage besides this? Is the MoVI removing all vibrations from the vehicle?

    Hi Michael.
Thank you for that update. Thought it was my brain fade! Footage was very smooth apart from the odd hole in the road.
I discovered that the Ninja Star fits perfectly on to my bike carrier and supports the Movi. May be of interest to other users, as I'm using a Seasucker Talon bike mount which is about £240 in the UK. Very solid bike mount which fits on car panel or even on glass, so absolutely solid for Movi. I did add a cross car tie-down for extra security.
I've attached a photo of it on my car for information. Photo was taken before mount was secured btw! Car.jpg

How did this cope with vibration from the car?

I'm currently looking for a way to mount an M10 to the back of a car and this looks like a really good option, but I worry that the vibrations will cause an issue.

I had it inboard on bonnet (hood) and it was only only bad holes that I had any noticeable shake. Otherwise very smooth. Chickened out of further testing beyond 30mph as I was only testing the practicality of the setup! May have some more movement if you're mounting at the extremity of the vehicle. I was using a C300 with a 16-35mm. f/4 lens which is a reasonably heavy combination.

I think I'll look into getting one of those Talons then.

Worth mentioning that if you're on public roads then a rig this size should not really be mounted on the bonnet due to the potential to cause injury if you hit pedestrians. You're also not allowed to attach it to the side of the car. I think if you want to do either of these you have to contact the police film unit. Mounting on the roof or the boot is fine, apparently, provided you're driving at speeds low enough not to throw someone up over the roof.

Thank you for that information. I just did a test round the block to check it out and wanted to keep an eye on it to see if it was stable. i.e. not about to fall off! Roof it will be next time as it certainly sticks. My mountain bike sits on the roof at 70mph. with the Seasucker mount so should be fine for Movi.

    Hi guys,

Just wanted to share with you a car mount I made & wanted it to be quick, modular and orientate in many ways. I also made it to easily travel pull it out of a Pelican case and it would fit any car setup under a minute.

So far smooth on sealed roads but that's all I need.

Anyone else out there making car mounts?

    Best

Are those rings made by Isolation Dynamics Corp? How much did the rig cost (outside of the MoVi)? That's BRILLIANT. Is it mounted to the spare tire holder?!

Very nice job on those wire vibration isolators. They work even better when compressed compared to suspended as shown above. You guys can make your own...I did! You just have to get the correct wire diameter for your weight. I'm using four 3mm diameter dampeners for the weight of the Epic and gimbal. The isolators are compressed rather than suspended. I'm using terminal blocks to connect them...works like a charm. Here is my version of a compressed wire rope vibration isolator. image.jpg image.jpg

    car Rig.jpg

    Hi guys,

Just did my first shoot with my car mount with fantastic results both suspended and compressed. The wire isolators worked brilliantly and so did the 10 inch suction cup along with the cheese plate can orientate and mount anywhere within reason on any vehicle with not much fuss. I made sure I used some safety straps as well as safety cord for the camera. The Movi M5 handled speeds of up to 100kms per hour no problems used with the Movi controller which was a breeze. Even fast G forces went well the only thing I experienced was some wind buffeting at high speeds. I was impressed and so was the client. We also had to get special police permits to use the rig anything bigger and you need a police escort. Pretty impressed with the little Movi M5 next I'll be trying the M15 with Arri Alexa Mini and Wedge Movi Controller.

    best,

    Pete

We have made one too. Works hanging or upside down. We combine it with a very flexible suction cup rig.

    Hi Pete,

It looks like you're recording wirelessly to a Sound Devices Pix 240i. Is that correct? What wireless system are you using? Have you ever experienced dropouts?

    Best,
    Gavin

    Hi

I wasn't recording wireless Gavin instead using a long HDMI to HDMI cable hard to see but you could go wireless I guess?

Nice Mount Robert Eder but check out this mount for some off road suspension.

It's called the VV1 Light by www.griptech.net.au not too expensive either.

It works seamlessly with Freefly Movi with Toad in the Hole and or any other stabilizer as long you have some mounting points.

I'm not affiliated with Griptech just wanted to share new tech if anyone is looking for this type of product.

    All the best,

    Pete

    Hi Atinun,
the mirricle is the combanation of both. You have to reduce the vibration for the gimbal and then it will work ...
You have to isolate the gimbal from the car, we also work with a suspension for the low frequenzy pumps and a vibration isolator for the high frequenzy shaking. You also can use a active vabration stabilisation like shotover or cineflex but these systems are very expensive.
