iOS App Available

Discussion in 'Announcements' started by Denise Fitzgerald, Jun 1, 2015.

  1. We will be sending out an email shortly that explains that due to unforeseen technical roadblocks, we were unable to deliver iOS functionality with the integrated Bluetooth module used on the MōVI product line. To allow iOS devices to connect to the MōVI, Freefly developed the MōVI Wi-Fi Adapter.

With the new MōVI Wi-Fi Adapter, you will be able to connect to your MōVI with your iOS device via a Wi-Fi connection. The Adapter plugs into the MōVI data port on the Gimbal Controller and has a range of approximately 150 feet. The adapter is compatible with MōVI Firmware v4.01 or later.

We will be offering the Adapter at the reduced price of $50 for the month of June and it will be available at the normal retail price of $125 starting July 1st. The MōVI Wi-Fi Adapter will be available in the online store later today. For more information about the MōVI Wi-Fi Adapter, check out this Knowledge Base article.

Denise, is there a way in which the wifi adaptor can be turned on and off without unplugging it? The reason I ask is that it will of course be great to have it 'on' for programming but I dont want to have a wifi emitting device right next to my 2.4GHz flight controller receiver on a drone hence the wish to be able to turn if off (once programming is complete)? This would be a major oversight if it cant be done.

lol - i did spot the joke there :)

I really love the build quality, and the way the Movi works
I just wish that they would get their act together with an iOS app - this paid-for wifi thingy seems a cop out - that I have to pay for.

A $50 dongle is making you reconsider your entire rig and wishing that you hadn't gone with freefly :) you're not charging enough as a MoVI op matey haha :) for me personally the benefits of MoVI far outweigh the cons. Yes, the iOS issue has been frustrating but the MoVI controller is fantastic, everything else about the software is superior and the innovation that freefly bring is better. From a support point of view freefly has been superb, we are based in the UK yet still we have had issues turned around in hours even with the time difference and I have never heard good things about DJI support. For small time use I totally understand the ronin is a great option, it's considerably cheaper and arguably more viable. We however loosely specialise in MoVI and movement and for us, from a day in day out standpoint will take the $50 hit and stick with tabb and his team ;-)

    Just my 2 cents(pennies)

    Phil

Haha now that my friend I can get on board with :)

  9. To answer your question Angus, at this time there is not a way to turn off the Wifi Adapter off outside of unplugging it. I have let the Engineering team know about your suggestion for future consideration.

    Best Regards,
    Denise

Angus, I might hazard a guess (worth every penny you paid for it ;)) that the Freefly Wi-Fi adapter might run on 802.11(a), which runs at 5gHz. At least it would if I'd designed it. That way it's less likely to interfere with any of your radio gear. I believe the ALTA has built-in Wi-Fi (probably the same hardware) to facilitate iOS connectivity, and I'd be surprised if it was running at 2.4gHz for the same reason.

I wonder if a future upgrade will allow control of mimic?

  13. Hi Angus/Steve - The Wifi Adapter runs at 2.4gHz (as 5gHz is not supported on some iPhones). With regards to flight, we have been flying with the embedded Wifi transceivers and have found no noticeable reduction in range. The WiFi adapter is relatively "quiet" when the app is not connected, only occcasionally tramitting that it's still alive so it can be reconnected if needed.

    Hi Denise,

We just got our wi-fi adapter but we are unsure of the installation procedure on the M10. Do you guys have some sample pictures of the the adapter in place, that also shows the port connection?
The instructions reference the M5 and M15, and we don't want to install the adapter incorrectly.

    Thanks!

Adolfo I'm not at my M10 but the only difference should be the cover as shown in step 01 of the instructions. Port layout is the same.

    Hi Gary,

Thanks for the clarification. We kept looking at the diagram and we were not finding the right orientation. No rush, but if you have a picture of where you placed the adapter, it would be very handy!

    Hi,

We've just received our wifi adapter. I'm a little confused. It looks like it plugs into the same port as the receiver for the Movi Controller. Is this true? Does this mean we have to choose between the Movi Controller and the Wifi adapter? If so, is there a splitter or some such thing for this (please forgive my ignorance).

I unplugged the controller receiver and plugged in the wifi adapter. I was able to connect to the wifi adapter on my iPad but when I opened up the app it tells me no device found (bluetooth working fine from the laptop). What am I not doing right?

...also when I plugged the receiver back in I am no longer getting any control from the Movi controller. The follow focus is still working fine, just nothing front the joystick or the mode switch. My receiver LED is flashing about twelve quick green flashes followed by one long green, this repeats.

    Any help is appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Ned

Thanks Andy. I can handle switching the cable back and forth if I have to. My primary concern is that the app isn't working with the movi and that I've lost the connection to the movi controller upon switching the cable back. Any help with that? Thanks:)
