I have a shoot coming up with both the Alexa M and the MoVI M15.

I've never worked with the Alexa M, and I'm slightly worried about the umbilical cord pushing the camera and affecting the shot. - Anyone worked with this combo before?

Also, as this will be my first shoot with the M15... Is the attachment of the top sliding plate a necessity? or if necessary can I not attach it should there be no cage etc....

    Thanks,

    Ken

Hey ken, not a lot of m15 field experience out there yet unfortunately, particularly w Alexa M.

For umbilical concerns, smart strain relief and soft/flexible cables are your friends here.

For top/bottom cage config, (Extrapolating from m10 experience), My guess is that you'll wanna attach at top and bottom for best results. ... eliminates any play in the single plate/connection and makes the camera mass "one" w the gimbal for stiffer settings etc.

Yeah, I remember having to use a belt clip to power the Red Epic long before the side v-lock plate was available... It was a nightmare, and lead me to use Red Volts for a good few months after that.

I've just found a this: ... Hopefully the cable used wasn't a custom one.

    Hi Ken,

I've used the Alex M several times on commercials & film having had an M10 extended beta version and you really need the ultra thin cable between the body and head, Freefly put me in touch with FIS Blue Inc and I bought the correct cable which was the FIS Blue SMPTE311M Cable
LEMO short FUW plug (no boot) [90o strain relief] -to- short PUW plug (no boot) [straight 15 feet (4.6 meters), NO Reel. It was around USD$900 but you will need it.
You will also need to buy 1/4" to 3/8" Convert Screw Adapter for the Alexa M to mount your baseplate. Hope that helps.

    All the best,
    Pete Barta

    Hey Wolf,

Glad you could make it work, most rental houses don't have the ultra thin cables.

    Best,

    Pete

Here's a pic of how thin that cable is for anyone who's thinking of getting one, I bought two one as a spare as they are very fragile.

    Thanks for the info gents.
Arri has a stedicam cable I will be testing on Friday. I'm sure it'll do just fine... along with a right angle connector.

...unfortunatly there is no real right angle connector available. I even talked to LEMO about that at IBC. Just a right angle strain relief, which gives us about 3 more cm at least.... The cable i "hacked" in the pic above is the ARRI cable.

Hehe, i know that one. It's the only one exists and it's custom built by Arri.

    Good luck!
