I wanted to share this test. We mounted the MoVi10 on our car for a neighborhood drive by tour just to see how it would do. This allowed us to work from inside the vehicle panning and tilting the camera. We kept our speed to about 15-20mph. The MoVI 10 was mounted upside down on a Manfrotto 502 pan head and then attached to the Glide Gear Frog Mount using the BMPCC Camera. With very little stabilization in FCPx, I thought the video came out pretty good.
You would do better to have some sort of vibration isolation in your mounting setup. Any bump you hit will get translated to the MoVI without it.
Bumpy roads aren't gong to cut it. I like the vibration isolation arm that Freefly had on that motorcycle at NABS. Maybe that will be offered soon?
Richard the arm was simply a Steadicam arm that was adapted with a bracket on the bike and on the camera end I think it had a Freefly Ninja plate and the new Toad in the Hole quick release. I don't have a picture of how the plate was attached to the arm.
I have a plate shot assignment this week and I was originally planning on using a Libra Head on a tripod off the back of a truck. The budget will allow for that set up but I think I am going to hang my Movi from surgical tubing like a bungee rig and get my plates that way. I will hold the Movi the same way I would if I was using it normally but the bungee will absorb much of the road shock and I will keep it stable other wise. The frame is intended to be locked off. I am doing a test tomorrow and will report back with some photos and perhaps a clip if I have time to render. We are only on wide lenses so I have more latitude on image shake. Ill try a long lens just for the sake of knowing if it will work. The road is in NYC so I expect some potholes.
Libra on a Heli with 15-40, and Movi on a tracking vehicle hand held by my grip. (Obviously his body takes out a lot of the movement and vibration compared to the Libra hard mount).
So an Epic on a Libra with a 15-40 on a hell (helicopter?) was less stable than an Epic on a movi hand held in a tracking vehicle. Crazy. I tested the movi today in a mini van hanging from a Bungee cord out the side door and found it a little floaty. But that was on a 50mm. I will do my actual shoot with a 21mm on a Movi as one pass and a camera on a vibration isolator on an o'conner as a second pass. Ill see whats better and do the following passes with the better set up. I'm going to skip the Libra.
Never did the movi set up since the Vib Iso was fine for the application and we didn't have time. Oh well.
I am busy getting brackets made up for a single steadicam arm to mount the movi onto - almost exactly what freefly has at NAB on the motorcycle. It's costing me £560, if I get 10 made up it will cost £200 I'll post pictures of it when it's made and some test footage.
Hi, I just want to share some pictures of my shotmaker configuration. I´m using my M10 with Red Epic on a Dodge Ram 2500 with egripment piccolo camera crane on it. I made a wire mount for the MöVI for absorbing the vabrations and a GFM Shockabsorber is above the wire mount. The result is very cool.
Wow, Christian that is indeed very cool. Would you be willing to share a little more info on the shock/vibration absorber?
The shockabsorber is is made by Grip Factory Munich also the iso damper. The wire mount is something I have seen from the Allied Drones Anti Vabration Mount. I just made it bigger ... It will work with 10kg or more.
