Andy, just as with soldered connections, if done properly a crimped connection is very secure and does not add significant resistance. You can indeed pop the connectors out of the housings by using a small flathead screw driver to push down on the locking spring.

I like them a lot but they cant be used for primary power connectors. The spark from the ESC caps corrodes the contacts with each use and eventually the surface is too marred to maintain good electrical contact. I melted a few doing torture testing a while back. That's one of the additional benefits of the EC5's- the spark only effects the very edge of the bullet connectors inside leaving the majority of the contact surface area nice and clean.

The XT-90s look like a good alternative. 90Amps and solder-tail. Dunno why, I'm always slightly leery of crimp fit and high current -- perhaps because I've seen too many fail or the contacts oxidize....Not a bad price from Hobby King, either. $7.99 for five pairs.

Hi everybody, thanks for these infos

Do you know if we can buy a cheaper compatible LEMO power connector for the RED instead of cutting their XLR?
Is a 4 pins ok as we can see on Chris picture that the 2 small pins are not used?

    Best,

    Alex

    Thanks for your answer Josh,
But it says there is an error (Si รจ verificato un errore imprevisto...), i can't see it or maybe it's not available in France from their website, do you have the reference of the connector ?

Thanks, i found it but i've just seen this thread on the RED forum:

"Does anyone know if you order the part number FGJ.1b.306.cwld72z from the epic manual regarding the dc in plug you will get the correct insert for the epic?
Normally a 306 insert is 6 equal size pins. However, Red is using 4 larger pins for power and 2 smaller pins.
I don't want to maker the same mistake again ordering from mouser as i did when I ordered fgj.1b.306.clld72z and got a typical 306 insert."

Looks like the original RED connector has 4 normal pins and 2 smaller pins like this, so maybe better to go with the original

You don't need the 2 smaller pins if you are powering from an external lipo battery.

Hi Tabb thanks for your answer,

I understand they are useless but do you mean that the 6 normal size pins connector will fit the holes at the back of the RED anyway? (i don't have the RED epic yet)

Hmm $62 at Mouser and $134 with the cable and XLR at Markertek. Is there anything for the RED at Dollar Store? ;)

    Dream on!

Wait until the real world of aviation hits the world of copters. $5 per 3 x 40 mm bolt. :) That's what type certification does for you! :)

Is it possible to power the RED with a external power cable without the side-handle?

I have the external power cable and want to get rid of the side-handle weight. The camera only powers up when the handle with the redvolt batt inside is on...?

    Any thoughts?

Bo, you don't need the side handle ... run a 4S battery straight into the power cable lemo on the back of the camera

    G'Day Bo,
Unscrew the side handle and leave it off the camera. We fly two RED's and don't own a side handle, actually I've never used the side handle ever.
    Cheers

The thing is - when I power up the camera, only by the DC in, it will not turn on. I have the red led on, but can't turn it on... Do I need the replace the handle with a plate to cover connections below?

you shouldn't need to ... the camera should power up from that state, DC power in, press the red button and it should start with or without a side plate. I made a carbon fibre plate to replace the side plates for one of our cameras and it worked fine so no electrical connections there.

Are you running the current firmware?
