So since there seemed to be a good amount of people looking for a test to see how well the pan motor was holding at higher gimbal weights, I decided to conduct this test. Below are pictures of the camera package and gimbal weights. Camera setup was 13lbs and the total gimbal weight was about 21-22lbs. Camera was a Red Epic MX with Contax Zeiss 100mm Macro (my heaviest lens). I attached a Switronix battery to the back to add extra weight. The MoVI Batteries were down at 35-40%. I didn't want to use a full battery just in-case the overall voltage affects the holding power. Here are the settings used for the test. These were based on the auto-tune @ 75% but then tweaked by me a bit. I did 4 runs sitting on the side of a pickup truck (safety 3rd). 2 runs were conducted at 40mph (18ms/s) and 2 at 50mph (22m/s). I logged the runs on the MoVI Pro and attached them so you can review them and can confirm the speeds. Column J is the speed in M/S. The result? It didn't even phase the MoVI. Held rock steady the entire time. The 100mm lens at 4K on the epic is equivalent to 174mm and it's completely usable footage. The jerky movements up and down were me, not the gimbal loosing it. I didn't adjust the Majestic setting for tilt for 100mm operator so it was sensitive. Here is the video for your review. Please let me know if you have any questions that I didn't cover already. Nice job FreeFly! Josh
Thanks so much Josh! Super promising If you don't mind and have time, could you do 1 more test? - side profile test once again (full run) - w/ the top pan motor at 25 degree inclination (toward the vehicle travel) to resemble the drones pitch - have your hands on top bar so the gimbals taking the full brunt of the wind resistance. - and have someone or your self safely try and do a slow pan over time "dual operator not Majestic" (starting by looking back at -45 degrees and pan to the front 45 degrees over 20sec or so). Again much appreciated for the test you already did! Jason
Josh: Where's the ice and snow in that video? Oh. Yeah. I remember. Phoenix, right? Send some warmth up to the Pacific NW, please. I wish I wasn't too! Have a good one! Andy Forensic Software & sUAV / Drone Analyst : Photographer : Videographer : Pilot (Portland, Oregon, USA): Trees=2, Ground=1, Props=11. Here's a full-screen version of the video straight from the EPIC at 174mm during the 3rd and 4th test. Josh
Thanks for the test Josh! I'll go crazy when doing car chase with M15 and heavy payload. M10/M15 simply doesn't meet the requirements for car chase shootings. Movi Pro seems to hold pretty good. Thanks again.
I didn't get a chance to run that other test yet but I'll try to get it in the next couple days (didn't have a truck available yesterday). I did however get to go fly the MoVI Pro with 100mm lens with our EPIC. At 4k it was 174mm equivalent. I 100% need a wireless follow focus system now (I don't have a MoVI Controller yet) but it came out pretty sweet! There is no post stabilization at all. My camera operator hadn't ever operated a lens at this focal length before so it was a little jerky at the beginning but he got a feel for it towards the end. Enjoy! Josh
this is super impressive test results for the movi pro guys thanks!!!. now how well it holds on lateral Gs in the corners
Hey Josh Thanks for the tests, really great stuff. Long Lens on drones is definitely the way forward and its good to see MoVI Pro performing so well.
I officially have an chase scene on my schedule for next weekend so I'll let you know how prep for that goes! Gonna use alta 8/movi pro
Hi Josh, did u use the same Movi Settings you have used in the car shot within the Alta for the flights? If you have used different flight settings could you please post them? Thanks! Matthias
